The best time to target squid is usually from September through to January, with October and November often producing some of the best shore fishing.

Best Places to Catch Squid in the UK

Some of the most popular places to try include:

  • Dorset – Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach and Swanage
  • Sussex – Brighton Marina, Shoreham and Newhaven
  • Devon – Brixham and Plymouth
  • Cornwall – Penzance, Looe, Falmouth and Porthleven
  • South Wales – Pembrokeshire, Milford Haven and Fishguard
  • Yorkshire – Whitby and Scarborough

Deep water close to shore is usually a good sign, particularly around harbour entrances, piers and breakwaters.

Best Conditions for Squid

Look for:

  • Calm, clear water
  • Dusk and darkness
  • Incoming tides
  • Deep water
  • Harbour or pier lights
  • Plenty of small baitfish

Squid often hunt around the edges of artificial light where small fish gather.

What Tackle Do You Need?

A light lure setup is usually enough:

Cast the jig out, allow it to sink, then work it back using a lift, pause and sink retrieve.

Squid often take the lure as it falls, so if you suddenly feel extra weight, keep steady pressure rather than striking hard.

What Squid Jig Colours Work Best?

It is worth carrying a few different colours.

Natural colours can work well in clear water, while pink, orange, glow and UV squid jigs are popular choices around dusk and after dark.

Changing depth and retrieve speed can often be more important than constantly changing colour.

Piers, breakwaters, marina walls, steep beaches and harbour entrances are all worth investigating.
